I have grown numb to so much material surrounding this sound and era, and here proves a rare opposite. 4 1/2For 50's jazz this live album holds up amazingly well, with Jamal's understated pianistic vision and some excellent trio work seeping through nearly all the cracks of good-time veneer.
I didn't even recall hearing it before. It was back in '58 and I was 10 years old. Well, my family played all types of music and one of those types in addition to classical was jazz. Also my CD doesn't skip.
To this day it is one of my favorite albums. I've been an inveterate Jazz Head ever since. I guess my dislike was overcome by sleep or waking or. I was amazed when they told me this but from then on I wore out the record playing it over and over again until it started to skip.
I was a hard case aficionado of Bach, Rachmaninoff and Mozart and I wasn't going for this "travesty" music. I was told that I had heard it many times before but never showed any interest. I was a classical music type and all other music didn't cut it for me. I got up and asked who got the new album.
I was completely overtaken by the music. Jazz or rock'n'roll didn't make it for me. Well, one morning as I awoke Poinciana was playing on the Hi-Fi.
It's just as delightful now as it was then, & I am delighted to have this item back in my collection of music. This CD has one of my favorite pieces from the 1950's, Poinciana.
Hope you enjoy it also.Lee Mascarello I went through at least 2 LP's and love it to this day. I was there when this was recorded. I was a senior in high school then, and I bought the record when it was released not knowing it had been recorded that night.
I just had to buy the CD. What a glorious live recording. Poinciana, Poinciana, Poinciana. And all the melodious memories have been rejuvenated. Now I can truly appreciate the entire performance; tinkling plates, glasses, and silverware included. If for nothing else, this album stands out in my mind with just that one song. One of the fondest childhood musical memories of listening to my father's record collection.
